Milkweed by Jerry Spinelli
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I haven't been so drawn into a book in sometime. I could not put it down. Literally! I carried it everywhere just to squeeze in a few more pages; I was up until midnight reading until it was over.
It's a story of survival, but there is no hero. There is only a small boy who lives on the street, and steals for a living - he thinks his name is 'Stopthief' for awhile. Its set in the holocaust, he's a gypsy and lives in the Warsaw Ghetto. He survives. He survives for all the wrong reasons really. He's the riff-raff that doesn't come good. Its unromantic, its dirty, its plain, and its totally fulfilling.
